In the Dr. Di Croce Dental Clinic particular attention is given to Oral Hygiene.  Majority of treatment plans begin with thorough Professional Hygiene.

Oral HygieneIn the course of Professional Hygiene we remove all the residues and tartar accumulated over time as it is impossible to maintain an absolutely efficient oral hygiene by means of domicile cleaning.

The steps of Professional Hygiene are as follows:

  1. Tartar Scaling: tartar (sometimes called calculus) is hardened plaque that can form on your teeth or underneeth the gumline.  Tartar is a threat to your dental health (as it facilitates plaque deposit and thus leads to caries and parodontal diseases), but it is also a cosmetic problem as it makes your smiles noticeably less attractive;  at the Dr. Di Croce Dental Clinic Tartar Scaling is done with an ultrasonic equipment;
  2. Polish: the dental surface is polished with the prophylaxis (prophy) paste which is applied on teeth with a soft rubber brush that spins on one end.
  3. Cleaning with Sodium Bicarbonate: (also known as baking soda) is used to eliminate the most resistant stains (of coffee, smoke etc), the particles of sodium are being “shot” at the dental surface.  Sodium bicarbonate is a soft water-soluble mineral that is a save and effective cleanser of tooth enamel.
  4. Root Planing and Scaling: it is a specific treatment that removes tartar, damaged cementum and dentin of the root, bacteria and their toxins from the root surfaces.  Root Planing is performed using ultrasonic instruments and hand instruments.  Usually this treatment is needed in case of gingivitis.
  5. Root Planing with Surgical Recontouring of the Gums: is done when the gum pockets are more than 5-6 mm deep and all the subgengival plaque and tartar can not be removed with the previously described methods.

After all the steps of the Professional Hygiene we teach our patients how to perform correct Domicile Oral Hygiene, giving personalised advice to each patient depending on individual problems and needs.

All our patients can adhere to the Dental Hygiene and Health Maintenance Programme and undergo regular dental checks ensuring thus that the results obtained in the treatment are long-term and ensuring Prevention of further dental diseases.
