Parodontology (Periodontics) is concerned with prevention and treatment of parodontal infection (periodontal disease, gingivitis, pyorrhea).  This disease affects the tissues supporting the tooth (rootcement, periodontal ligament between bone and tooth, bone, gum) and in more advanced cases can bring to tooth loss.

healthy gumsIf diagnosed early, the periodontal disease (pyorrhea) can be cured in a non-surgical way by  removing subgingival plaque and targar through curettage and deep root planing and by changing the patient’s oral hygiene habits.

In the Dr. Di Croce Dental Clinic the periodontal disease is treated with laser.  See an article about Use of Diode Laser to Cure Periodontal Disease (Pyorrhea).

If the Periodontal Disease has reached a more advanced stage surgical treatments become necessary:  Resective surgery to remodel the bone defects; Regenerative surgery to regenerate the supporting tissue around the roots.
